Our Mission is: providing emergency food and clothing to those in need (since 1984)

From the desk of  the Executive Director

Poverty Reduction policies and programs are being rolled-out. There have been some improvements for people living on low income over the past year.

Extension of Health Card for working poor

Increasing Income Assistance for singles from 294 to 537 per month

Increased number of affordable housing units in Fredericton (53).

However still work to be done:

1.  Modification of Economic Unit Policy to allow people receiving Social Assistance to live together and share costs.  This is taking to long to rewrite the policies, they will not change until June 2011.   People cannot benefit now from the new policy with the exception of new clients as of Jan 1st, 2010.

2.  Dramatically increase the amount that those currently receiving Income Assistance can earn before their cheques are reduced. This will cost the public purse zero and provide the incentive for those who desperately want to escape the welfare trap.

3. Economic stimulus can be achieved not just by cutting income taxes for those at the upper end of the economic scale but by putting money in the hands of those who will spend it immediately for the basic necessities of life.  In other words – unfreeze income assistance rates.

Together we can make a difference by being aware, and promoting change

Executive Director

FRED FM 92.3 “in touch with our community”

Fred FM was the new kid on the block in July 2005, and John Knox, Director of Marketing & Promotions, was there from the very beginning. Less than 60 days after opening they hosted a large community event “Stuff A Bus” a food drive for the Fredericton Food Bank.  Pouring rain did not dampen spirits as they overcame difficulties and raised $15,000 or 8 tons of food. Newcap Radio Inc. the owners of Fred FM, have a philosophy, that it is their responsibility to serve the communities in which they are licensed, in part by helping groups that make a difference in the community. A few of the FRED FM annual events are: Miracle Treat Day with Dairy Queen for IWK, Boxers n Bras Across the Bridge in support of cancer awareness, the Fill er Up Food Drive with Sobeys stores, Rotarians and Daily Gleaner and the M.S. Walk to name a few.  John says the best part of his job is helping non profits connect with the community, and matching sponsors with a charity is really satisfying.  Fred FM is there to serve the community, they enjoy making a difference.  We at the Foodbank say, “It is about people helping people, and FRED FM scores a 10 of 10  every time.

École Sainte-Anne, Grades 6-12

In February of this year Mathieu Quimper and Marianne DosSantos came up with a great idea. Have the whole school collect non-perishable food items, enough to fill the classrooms, then have the students make a human chain that will pass down the items from student to student, beginning at École Sainte-Anne, ending at the Fredericton Food Bank.

This project will actually happen on Tuesday May 18th between 10 and 11am.

Elizabeth Crawford Thurber states “Once again the numbers have increased from 2009 to 2010. From January to the end of April 2010 we have fed 8,285 individuals. This food drive is very important to help maintain and sustain food availability.

École Sainte-Anne is a very active school helping the Food Bank with food collections during dances, the hockey team Les Castors also do a great job including the Food Bank in their activities.

A Clients Story:

A middle age woman after 24 years of marriage found herself separated, and living in the family  home. With the mental and financial stress, her health failed and she ended up in the Hospital.  Then she lost her job of over 20 years, unable to mentally and physically fulfill her job duties.  With no income and only a few years left in the home mortgage and car loan she has nothing to eat, as she is trying to keep her home and vehicle.   She is so grateful for compassionate friends, community  and her children who are now trying to help her out as best they can. Life is very difficult, and she has waited almost a year before coming to the Food Bank for food help.  She does not like to ask. Dealing with the depression, sadness and worry of what is going to happen makes each day a burden.  Your food helps her and many others in similar circumstances.

Canada Bread, They Deliver

Canada Bread opened its doors on Riverside Drive in 1985 as Bens Bakery.  Current Manager of Melissa Street Sharon Goodfellow  was working in the Saint John store and was asked to come and run the new Fredericton location, she said yes, and has been with the company now for 30 years. Breads are brought back from their 4 outlet locations Main Street Fredericton North, New Maryland, Lincoln Rd, and 135 Melissa Street.. Excess or unsold bread is donated to local Food Banks. Sharon says she is sorry there is not more bread (like there used to be), but they do their best to help. Bread rolls and sweets are baked in their Moncton, Dartmouth, Woodstock and Grand Falls plants.  The highest quality is ensured. Canada Bread is currently owned by Maple leaf Foods, who are committed to several charities of choice “United Way” being one of them, and also supporting the local community   We say: “They Deliver”!

Q: Www. Food Banks Canada Who is Hungry in Canada?

Food banks experienced the largest  increase on record in 2009. Canadians do not have sufficient income to adequately support themselves and their families.  Social assistance benefits levels are far too low for families to afford even the bare essentials.  It is also becoming more difficult to earn adequate employment income.  Visit the web site for more information.
